This website is purely focused on creating awareness and helping parents support their children who have Selective Mutism. Of course there are a lot of websites out there which can give you the information about Selective Mutism however I wanted to share my story of how I managed to support my child and overcome it.
It is a rare anxiety with about 1 percentage of school children impacted. When I was working with my daughter I found it hard as her teachers, coaches, friends and family had never heard about SM and I struggled to get support. As a parent when I saw my child suffer silently my heart would sink and at times I felt so very helpless. I wanted to create awareness and reach out to as many people as possible to help them equip their child and support them in this journey. I would hate to see another child suffer in silence and sometimes this anxiety gets overlooked and taken as that the child is reserved or shy. I have discussed in my website how we can distinguish between shyness and a Selective Mutism. If it is an anxiety we have to treat it. No one ever grows out of it. No, it will not get better with time but only worse if not addressed.
I never thought we would reach so far from the point where the teachers never knew if she knew how to speak to presenting to a class and answering questions in front of her class. Constant and persistent practice of speaking and encouragement lead us to success. If I could work to help my child overcome this anxiety I am sure even you can if you just use the right strategies and processes in place. Remember there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
